This skin balancing cleanser is one of my favorites. It's great for oily and combination skin because it cleanses, hydrates and balances your skin's oil production, while still being very gentle.
Natural facial cleanser recipes that contain aloe vera (like this one) are great because aloe is a powerful skin restorer, balancer and cleanser.
Combined with lavender to soothe irritation, petitgrain to clear congested skin, and geranium and ylang ylang for a smoothing effect, this recipe is a fabulous everyday formulation. And you'll LOVE the scent!
1/2 cup (125ml) Lavender Hydrosol OR Herbal Infusion (see below)
2 tablespoons (30ml) Vegetable Glycerin
2 tablespoons (30ml) Aloe Vera gel
4 drops Lavender essential oil
3 drops Petitgrain essential oil
2 drops Geranium essential oil
1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil
1. Pour everything into a 200ml (or larger) dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Shake well to mix. Wait 24 hours before using to let the skin balancing cleanser "cure".
2. To make a herbal infusion:
Combine 1/2 cup (125ml) distilled water with 2 tablespoons each of lavender flowers, lemongrass and chamomile in a small pot and bring to a boil on the stove.
Remove from the heat and let steep for 30 minutes to an hour.
Strain out the herbs and use in the recipe above.
3. To use, dampen your skin with warm water, then gently massage the skin balancing cleanser into your skin. Rinse, pat dry, then apply toner and natural moisturizer.
I actually prefer Rose Geranium hydrosol to the lavender because it smells DIVINE, and it's great for balancing not only skin but mood and hormones as well.
Lime hydrosol is another great choice if you love citrus scents. It's a cleanser and especially good if your skin is very oily or you're coping with acne.
If you use lime hydrosol, consider switching the petitgrain essential oil with lemon or lime. Just remember not to use your skin balancing cleanser before going out in the sun if you use citrus oils.
My favorite supplier for aromatherapy recipe ingredients like vegetable glycerin and aloe is Mountain Rose Herbs. Their prices are excellent and their quality is good. Here's some quick links to the ingredients you'll need for this homemade skin balancing cleanser...
Another supplier I really like is doTerra. They only supply oils though, not the base ingredients like vegetable glycerin or aloe vera gel.
I switched to doTerra's oils a while ago when I tested them against the other brands in my stockpile. I found I got better results, and I never got headaches or skin irritation, which sometimes happened with other brands.
doTerra's oils cost more than other brands, but that's because the quality is higher. There's no fillers or substitutes to drop the cost in making them.
I find that because they're so effective, I can get away with using fewer drops per recipe, which helps even out the cost. So if you want high quality, ultra-effective oils, these guys are for you.
You can buy doTerra's oils at retail prices by clicking the Shop button at the top. Or click Join & Save to become a wholesale customer and get a store-wide 25% discount. Message me if you want more details on the wholesale deal - it's well worth it.
For the best variety of any online store ever, browse Amazon. They have every brand you can imagine, and a wide range of prices.
Please remember - you get what you pay for, especially with essential oils. If a bottle of oil only costs a couple of dollars, it's only going to be worth a couple of dollars. There are no laws enforcing purity so you have to trust the supplier. Buy the best oils you can afford.
Here's how I think of it... For budget, choose Mountain Rose. For quality, choose doTerra. For variety, choose Amazon.
