Lotion Goes Bad Without Enough Preservative
by: Kyley

You rock, Gill!

My mom has a skin reaction to the grapefruit seed extract, so she reduces the number of drops in her lotion recipes, and her lotion goes moldy after about 2 months.

Just to goes to show how important is it is to use the right amount of the right preservative...

I have done so many of these recipes and I use the Grapefruit Seed Extract, and also put vitamin E in (as this is a natural perservative as well).

I find that these work really well, I have done the cleanser and moisturizer recipes and they are lasting at least six months if not more, and that is not with it being in the fridge (as I forget to take out of the fridge to use, or if I do remember to take it out I forget to put it back in)

I get my Grapefruit Seed Extract from Essentially Oils, they do not charge postage & packaging and there is no minium order to put in like some sites. I think it is about £7.95 for a 45ml bottle and a 100ml is £12.50.

Hope this helps you out

Lotion Recipe Preservatives
by: Kyley

There's more than one type of preservative you can use to make your lotions last. I use natural preservatives because I think synthetic products can have negative side effects we're not necessarily aware of.

The recipes on this site use Grapefruit Seed Extract as the preservative. Rosemary extract is another natural preservative if you can't find grapefruit seed extract.

There are also synthetic options such as Germall and Germaben, which I have never tried.

Hope that answers your question. Happy lotion making!
