Adding Fragrance in Candle Making

by Noeline Mccamish
(Collie Western Australia)

Q: Hi, I have just started to make candles. The first batch was great, but I'm not sure if I put in enough fragrance oil. 2lb of wax chips melted and I added 3 caps of oil - is this enough or too much?

Love your site, it's beautiful. Noeline

A: Hi Noeline, thanks - I'm glad you like the site. I'm not sure how big a cap is so I can't tell if that's the right amount of fragrance or not. Also, not sure if you're using essential oils or candle fragrance oils, so that complicates things too.

I'm assuming you're talking about soy wax, and different types of soy wax can handle different concentrations of scent load. Check with your supplier to see what yours can take.

A good general rule of thumb is 5 to 10 percent fragrance oil per pound of wax, which translates to about 1oz of fragrance oil per pound when you work out the math at 6 percent. I hope that helps answer you question :)

fragrance NEW
by: Tammy

1lb of soy wax can only hold 2 tablespoons of fragrance. I use a measuring spoon to add mine. Some scents I need the full 2 but there are many that I do not. When you use the 2 tablespoons it is considered double scenting. Hope this helps some :)

Hi there,

I generally use 2 tablespoons to 2.5 tablespoons of fragrance per 500grams of soy wax

Homemade Candle Making - When Do I Add the Fragrance?

Q: On your soy candle making instructions, the video temperature for the wax and the printed text for the correct temperature to add fragrance are not the same. Which is the correct temperature - 140 or 115?

A: In the video, the candle maker is using a synthetic candle fragrance, which is added at a temperature of 140.

My printed candlemaking instructions are for using natural essential oils, which are added when the temperature has dropped to 115, since they evaporate off at higher temperatures. Simply choose the temperature depending on which fragrance option you're using.

I should add that essential oils have a weaker scent throw than candle fragrance oils, but they're also non-toxic - not the case with synthetic scents.

I hope that clears up the confusion, and good luck with your candle making!
