SOS!! I am creating my first blend and need ALL the help I can get

by Aracely
(England)

Hi everyone!

I am a smells type of person and LOVE my house to always smell good.

While living in Australia, I came across two magnificent oil blends. I purchased these for a few years while I lived out there.

I am now living in England and CANNOT find ANYTHING even remotely close to the blends I used to purchase. It is sooooo difficult to even find a place that sells oils (without it being a shop. I used to get my oils at the markets out in Aus).

I usually only use the oils for burning in a diffuser or adding a few drops in the bath tub.

The two blends I am looking at obtaining by doing it myself are with the following scents:

Bergamot,
Geranium,
Ginger,
Peppermint and
Ylang Ylang

Geranium
Ylang Ylang
Lavender
Marjoram
Orange
Petitgrain and
Sandalwood

How much do I add of each oil into the blend? Do I need a carrier oil if these are to be used in a diffuser and bathtub?

Greatly appreciate your advice! I am very excited and looking forward to create this on my own.

Hi,

My oils arrived today (except ginger) and the first thing I did was check the label. Gill, everything that you mentioned below (english and latin name, quantity, batch number, date, name, phone and address where I bought it from) are on the label.

I was dissapointed that they forgot about the ginger but I have contacted them and they are sending it out first thing tomorrow morning.

The first blend was my priority but given that I am missing the ginger I went ahead and got started with the second one.

Here's what I have so far which seems quite nice but I haven't hit the bulls eye just yet:

Geranium 1
Ylang Ylang 15
Lavender 8
Marjoram 3
Orange 6
Petitgrain 2
Sandalwood 2
Peppermint 3 (this is not originally on the recipe)

I have tested the milk theory and the oil blend stays on top of the milk just as it does with water.

The alcohol theory is a bit difficult to test as they do not sell normal isopropyl alcohol. What the sell in the pharmacies is some weird version of that with a scent.

Hi

I have never heard of adding alcohol or milk to a burner before, but have just looked this up on the net and I have come across somehting called an infusion lamp. If you go to this site it gives you more information and how to make it, sounds interesting.

An infusion lamp, also called an effusion lamp or a perfume lamp, has a catalytic burner that purifies the air in an indoor room. Scent is often added, and the lamps are commonly used in aromatherapy

Using an aromatherapy oil burner
by: Kyley

I just add a few drops of essential oils to a bit of water in the top of the burner.

Here's a page with some info on using oil burners:

I've never heard of using alcohol or milk in an oil burner. But I never thought to look that up.

Hope your oils turn out to be lovely!

Thanks guys for your help!

I had no clue what to look for when purchasing oils. I had never purchased oils online.

Will make a note of everything you mentioned and keep it with me. Sadly I purchased the oils from the site mentioned last Friday. I will definitely have a look on the label and report back.

I did call the company and the person who I spoke with was very helpful and gave me a few tips.

Just to confirm, the attendant mentioned that oils can be diluted in alcohol and milk to burn on a burner, is that true? If diluted wouldn't it evaporate quicker?

I have not heard or looked on mothers natures goodies until now, the one thing I did notice is that Sandalwood essential oil, is also called amyris, this is a substitue and it is selling for £3.10 for a 10ml, if you look at different sites Sandalwood is selling for £16.50 for a 5ml. This price I got from Essential Oils online, I use this company frequently and I am happy with the service and products they sell, also if you ring or email them they are prompt in getting back to you and very helpful.

Before you order any essential oils, it is advisable to ring the company if they give a phone number and ask what they have on their labels for the essential oil, you should have the english and latin name, how much is in the bottle (10ml), the batch number, the date and the name and address where you have brought it from.

If this information is not on the labels then I wouldn't buy from them. It is also advisable to shop around, some places do free delivery on orders over a certain price whilst others will charge for next day delivery. You need to try and find one which you are happy with and is also repitile as well, read the customer testimonials and find out what they think of the company.

Your blends
by: Kytley

I would say for the first blend you'll want something like...

3 drops bergamot
1 to 2 peppermint
1 to 2 ginger
1 each geranium and ylang

You'll have to try these proportions and decide if they smell like the scent you're trying to duplicate. If not, adjust each "note" up or down depending on what your nose tells you.

For the second blend, maybe start with...

2 to 4 lavender
2 each petitgrain and orange
1 to 2 marjoram
1 each geranium, ylang and sandalwood

This one I'm less sure of 'cause I can't quite imagine what the final scent would be. It's going to take some experimenting before you get what you're looking for.

That's the great thing - you can't really do this wrong! Make very small batches until you get the scent you want, them start using them in whatever recipes you want.

Gill'[s advice about putting the blend into a carrier oil or milk bath / bath salt is important. You can use the recipes on this site to determine how many drops for each type of recipe.

Say for example a lavender bath salt recipe calls for 3 cups of salt and 30 drops of lavender - use 3 cups of salt and 30 drops of your custom blend. You're just doing a substitution, and that way you can adapt every type of bath and body product to your preferences.

Remember - have fun, experiment and play! :)

Have you heard of mothernaturesgoodies.co.uk This is my first time ordering any oils online. I didn't like the idea as I much rather smell the oils first. Given that I couldn't find a place in London that sells oils (aside from holland and barret and some other chain store) I had to go with the above website.

So I put 8 drops of each oil in order to create the blend? I am a complete newb and desperate to recreate this lovely blend.

blending first blend

firstly the best place i have found for obtaining essential oils is online, you need to find a repitile company. the one i use is called esential oils online, there address is www.essentailoilsonline.co.uk they are based in norfolk england. I use them on a regular basis and had no problem with them.

Secondly if you are going to use either one of these blends in the bath i would dilute it in a carrier oil or you could use bath milk, dispersing bath oil, unscented bubble bath, epsom salts are just a few to think about, what ever carrier you are using i would use no more than 20ml, into this i would put 8 drops of the essential oils in any combiation you fancy as long as you dont go over the 8 drops.

In a diffuser i would use what the manifactuerer says but agian no more than 8 drops of the essential oils.

Hope this guves you a bit of guidance and enjoy xx
