Shelf Life of Homemade Aromatherapy Products

by joe

Is there anything that can be added to make aromatherapy products such as cleaning products or facials or lotions last as long on the shelf as products you buy from the store with all their preservatives?

Preservatives for Essential Oil Recipes
by: Kyley

Hi Joe,

The preservative I use the most is Grapefruit Seed Extract, and Rosemary Extract is also a good natural option. The recipes on this site will generally last a couple of months if stored properly, which is in a cool dark place in PET plastic or glass.

If you want to make double-sure of the shelf life of any products, just add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract after the heating portion of the directions is complete.

Here's another page with some more information on preservatives...

Hope that helps... Good luck, Joe, and don't hesitate to keep in touch!
