Aromatherapy Shampoo for Natural Hair

Make your own natural hair shampoo...
your whole head will thank you!

Making your own shampoo for natural hair is not only good for your head, but it's also good for your planet.

Shampooing is a Must because dust, pollution and our own natural hair oils can bring our hair down in a hurry. Greasy never looks good!

That said, you don't want to overdo it because too-frequent washing strips your hair of its natural defenses (natural hair oil is necessary in small amounts!) If your hair isn't prone to oiliness, once every couple of days is probably enough.

Commercial Versus Natural Hair Shampoo

There's a BIG difference in the way natural hair shampoo feels compared to drugstore or salon shampoo.

Commercial shampoos generally add chemicals to create a lot of foamy bubbles so the experience feels more effective. In fact, it's not. The sensation of lather isn't really related to the amount of cleanliness at all.

So when you start using these natural hair recipes, give yourself a little time to get used to them - at least a week - so you can see the results and get comfortable with the change in texture.

Basic Shampoo for Natural Hair

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (60ml) distilled Water or Herbal infusion (see below)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) liquid Castile Soap
  • 1/4 tsp Vitamin E (or 1 capsule)
  • 5 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
  • Essential Oil Blend for your hair type
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon Grapeseed oil (don't use if your hair is oily or fine; it may make your hair greasy)

Additional Ingredients for Your Hair Type

  • Dry or damaged hair: 1/2 tsp Vegetable Glycerin and 2 tablespoons (30ml) Aloe Vera gel.
  • Oily hair: 1 tablespoon (15ml) Apple Cider Vinegar.
  • Thinning hair: 2 tablespoons (30ml) Aloe Vera gel.
  • Dandruff: 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 tablespoons (30ml) Aloe Vera gel.

Directions

Combine all the ingredients in a 250ml dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Shake before using.

Handy Hint: If you want a thicker shampoo, reduce or eliminate the water. If you eliminate the water, you don't need the grapefruit seed extract - it's a natural preservative that kills any bacteria in the water.

Herbal Shampoo for Natural Hair

Adding a herbal infusion to your shampoo for natural hair will enhance the color and healthy appearance of your hair. Here's how:

  1. Combine 1/4 cup (60ml) distilled water with 1 tablespoon each of the appropriate herbs in a small pot and bring to a boil on the stove.
  2. Remove from the heat and let steep for 30 minutes to an hour.
  3. Strain out the herbs and replace the water with your infusion in the basic shampoo recipe above.

Note: The infusion for gray hair smells pretty "herbal", but lots of people say it really does bring back your original hair color if you use it daily.

Pre-Shampoo Treatment for Dry Hair

This is a quick, easy trick for preventing your shampoo from further drying out already dry, damaged or frizzy hair.

hair products for natural hair

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (60ml) jojoba, sweet almond or olive oil
  • 3 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 2 drops rose OR palmarosa essential oil
  • 1 drop ylang ylang essential oil

Directions

  1. Combine the oil and essential oils in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Store in a cool, dark place.
  2. Before shampooing, pour a little bit of the oil into the palm of your hand, rub your palms together and smoothe onto the ends of your hair.
  3. To make shampooing more effective, apply shampoo to dry hair then continue as normal.
