Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

Essential oils and skin care... sandalwood spice - one of the best natural skin moisturizers

This rich, creamy homemade lotion recipe is one of the best natural skin moisturuzers you'll ever make - it soothes, hydrates and heals dry, suffering skin.

Its spicy, exotic scent is perfect for warming winter-chapped hands, feet and every part in between! Plus it's not too girly, so it's a great moisturizer for men.

Here's a quick rundown of the benefits of these essential oils and skin care: Frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood essential oil are powerful skin-healers.

They're good for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne, as well as for reducing scarring from wounds. And frankincense is famous for reducing wrinkles

Sandalwood Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

sandalwood essential oils and skin care

Ingredients

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (3 to 8g) Emulsifying wax
(depending on how thick you want it)
  • 1/3 cup (75ml) Jojoba or Apricot Kernel oil
  • 2 tablespoons (25ml) Vegetable Glycerin
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) distilled Water
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Vitamin E
  • 10 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
  • 20 drops Sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops Patchouli essential oil
  • 5 drops Benzoin OR Frankincense essential oil (or use 3 drops Benzoin, 2 drops Frankincense)

Directions

  1. Stir together the oil, emulsifying wax and glycerin in the top part of a double boiler, warming slowly over a low heat until the wax is melted. Remove from heat and pour in the Vitamin E.

  2. In a separate pot on the stove or in the microwave, gently warm the water just until lukewarm.

  3. Slowly pour the water into the oil, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until the mixture is thick and smooth.

  4. Stir in the essential oils and the grapefruit seed extract. Pour the lotion into a clean, sterilized 8oz (250ml) dark glass or PET plastic bottle and allow it to cool before putting the cap on.

  5. Shake the bottle occasionally as the homemade body lotion cools to prevent the ingredients from separating. Store in a cool, dark place.

This body lotion recipe makes approximately 8oz (250ml) sandalwood lotion.

Customizing Your Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

For a thicker consistency, (more like a cream) add a little more emulsifying wax (up to a half a teaspoon more.) For a thinner consistency, add just a little less.

You can also reduce the strength of the scent by decreasing the number of drops of essential oils. Do not increase the essential oils, however, since they should only be a certain percentage of the total recipe.

Choosing the best carrier oils: For a richer, more moisturizing lotion, use Sweet Almond oil. For oily, acne-prone skin, use Grapeseed oil.

natural skin moisturizers You can customize your blends for your skin type or condition by adding small amounts of Avocado or Evening Primrose oil. Read the carrier oils page and see what would work best for you.

Experiment with the recipe. Try it one way the first time, then try something else the next. (Handy hint: Take notes - I always forget what I wanted to change by the time I'm ready to make more.)
