Pink Eye Home Remedies

Gentle home remedies for pink eye to soothe and heal icky, itchy eyes

Pink eye is often caused by the same viruses that cause colds, sore throats or measles. Pink eye home remedies can help ease the itchiness and ickyness while also helping to stop the spread of the virus.

Obviously, the first thing to do is NOT RUB or touch your eyes, hard though this may be. It won't help, and in fact may worsen the swelling and redness and cause more pus to ooze out of the eyes.

To get gunk out of the eyes, especially in the morning if they're stuck closed, use a clean, warm (not hot) washcloth to gently soften and wipe away the pus. Use a different washcloth for each eye and throw the washcloth in the laundry when you're done - don't reuse them during the day.

Here are a few simple home remedies for pink eye that will help soothe the discomfort and speed up healing.

Pink Eye Home Remedies
Hot Compresses

A good way to soothe the itching and discomfort is to put warm compresses on the eyes. Even a simple washcloth warmed up to a little above body temperature will feel good.

Soaking the cloth in calendula tea is even better, because calendula has antiviral and antibacterial properties and also speeds healing. Here's how to make calendula tea:

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 tablespoons of dried calendula petals. (Click to buy calendula petals´╗┐.) Steep in a covered container for 15 minutes, then strain.

Dip a clean washcloth in the liquid, wring out the cloth slightly, then gently place the warm cloth on the eye(s). Re-wet and reapply the cloth every couple of minutes for about 15 minutes, reheating the tea as necessary. Repeat the process several times throughout the day.

Goldenseal Eyewash

Another effective pink eye home remedy is an eyewash using goldenseal, which soothes irritation and fights infection.

Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon powdered goldenseal root. (Click to buy goldenseal root powder.)Cover and steep for 15 minutes. Strain the liquid through a paper coffee filter to remove all the powder.

Use an eye wash cup (you can get these at your local pharmacy or click to buy one from Amazon.com) to rinse the eye with the lukewarm goldenseal liquid. Do this three times a day.

Pink Eye Home Remedies
Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree is a powerful germ fighter - it kills viruses and bacteria.

Put 3 to 5 drops of tea tree essential oil into 1 teaspoon of carrier oil such as olive oil or grapessed oil and rub in into to your feet, thumbs, ankles and the base of your neck. If you're careful, you can apply it around the eye area, as long as you DO NOT GET IT IN YOUR EYES.

Tea tree works when you apply it to other areas of your body because its microscopic particles enter your bloodstream through your skin, and then they get to work killing the virus. Learn more about how aromatherapy works.

I recommend getting your tea tree from Mountain Rose Herbs, who supply good quality oils at excellent prices.

Prevent Pink Eye

A sensible thing to do is prevent pink eye from taking hold in the first place. You can prevent infection in two simple ways:

  1. Disinfect your environment to kill germs.
  2. Strengthen your immune system so your body wins the fight against germs.

Essential oils are great for this because they cover both bases at once. Any disinfectant essential oil you use to wipe down surfaces or diffuse into the air is going to kill germs on contact, and it's also going to help your body fight off infectious attacks by strengthening its immune defenses.
