My cream lotion is separating-using beeswax to emulsify.

by Angela
(NY)

I use 1 cup oil, 1 oz of beeswax and 1/2 cup water. Maybe I didn't mix it long enough but is starts to separate a bit after it cools. Am I using enough beeswax? anyone have any tips? I have done this successfully using 6 tbs of water but I don't want it to be so thick. I prefer to stick with beeswax without borax and would rather not use e-wax.
Thanks,
Angela

Separation in Emulsion
by: Anonymous

Your beeswax amount is fine. Check that your temperatures of oil & water match when mixing and also listen out for the change in tone
when mixing. When you hear that continue to mix just a little longer and then it should be fine. Some oils take longer to mix than others.

Hope this helps

Using Beeswax Emulsifier
by: Kyley

I have never had success at keeping lotions with beeswax from separating.

I'm impressed that you have, Gill. Mine always start out fine and then separate after a week or so. Grrr. I got so frustrated I just gave up and switched to the emulsifying wax. Grrr.

I have used in the past 40grams of any base oil, (which ever suits the purpose), 10g beeswax, and 40grams of hydrosol (distilled water.

This is the basic recipe for Cold Cream, I have done it with these quantities and it came out fine, the next time i did it I doubled the recipe and I found that I had water in it after setting.

So I am thinking that either there was too much water or the water wasn't warm enough when i mixed it into the oil and beeswax.

I am going to try another batch with a little less water in it, say 70grams of hydrosol and see how that works.

Hope this helps
