What's a good book for organic lotion making?

Organic Lotion Recipe Book

Hi Angela,

Organic skin care recipe books are amazingly thin on the ground - there really aren't that many to choose from. That said, I have a couple of suggestions.

The first one is a book called Organic Body Care Recipes from Mountain Rose Herbs (my favorite supplier.) It gives a whole variety of organic recipes, a bunch of which are for organic facial moisturizers, body lotions, creams, butters and balms. Some of the recipes are pretty simple, and most of them don't use preservatives so you have to make small amounts and keep them in the fridge.

I think it's hard (if even possible at all?) to find organic preservatives. I haven't tried. I like to use organic base ingredients in my lotions, such as the carrier and essential oils, but some of the ingredients, like the grapefruit seed extract, are not organic. So I do half and half, with the thinking that some organic is better than none.

A super-popular book is Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin from Amazon. It gives skincare recipes using food ingredients for each season, and for each astrological sign, plus more recipes for skin problems such as wrinkles, pimples, etc. It's a beautiful book, with gorgeous illustrations, a ton of recipes and the natural, earth-friendly attitude you're looking for in an organic book. I definitely recommend it!
