Lip Balm Recipe

Hi Kyley!

Your site is great. I recently started getting into more natural products since moving to the west coast of Canada where green is definitely the scene ;)

I would like to make my own lip balm. I have very dry skin and my lips are no exception. Since moving to the coast, my skin has been better, but it is sensitive and it LOVES moisture. I have always used really thick creams on my face and if I didn't moisturize my skin after washing it, it would flake. As long as I moisturize once during the day, I am ok.

Also, do you have any recommendations for perioral acne? I was diagnosed with a small breakout last year (which was so weird because I can count on two hands the number of pimples I have had in my lifetime and I am 27). I was using cortizone (yikes... worst thing for it!) and finally went to the doctor and was prescribed Retisol-A. It works, but it's not my favorite stuff. I was problem free again all year (I stopped using Retisol-A once everything cleared up), but I am having a small outbreak again (exact same time as last year, so must be holiday stress and change of weather). Any recommendations?

Wanted to also let you know about a great cleaning product I found (earth friendly and a patented packaging refill design that uses 80% less plastic). The company is iQ Cleaners I have only used the bathroom and all purpose cleaners... they are AMAZING and very affordable! I plan to get them as stocking stuffers for everyone this year.

Thanks in advance for your help and thanks for a great site.

Lip Balm Recipe NEW

Hi Roz,

Sounds like the west coast is treating you well! I grew up on Vancouver Island - you're lucky to be there!

Here's a very basic lip balm recipe to get you started.

2 tablespoons sweet almond oil or shea butter
1 tablespoon grated beeswax (you can use a pure beeswax candle for this)
1 Vitamin E capsule
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin for extra moisture
1 to 2 drops lavender essential oil to soothe and heal

Place the oil and wax in a heatproof cup (such as a heavy glass measuring cup.) Poke a hole in the Vitamin E capsule and squeeze its liquid into the oil and wax mixture.

Place the heatproof cup in a pot of water on the stove and heat on low just until the wax melts. Remove immediately from heat.

Pour the liquid into a small screw-cap jar or lip balm jar or tube. Allow to cool (it will solidify) before using.

For your perioral acne, stop using fluoride toothpaste - fluoride is deadly poisonous and is a common cause of perioral acne; use only natural products on your skin, including makeup. Cheap crap on sensitive skin can also be a cause. Once the toxins in and on your face are removed, it should clear up as your body eliminates the residual effects of the toxins. You might consider doing a gentle cleanse - your health food store or a naturopath can help you figure this part out.

In terms of putting stuff on your face, a good nightly facial oil could be good, such as this one I just suggested for Rita...

But use 2 drops lavender, 2 drops rose and 1 drop chamomile instead of the essential oils I suggested for her.

I use a terrific toothpaste made by doTerra which is fluoride-free and uses essential oils to keep your mouth healthy and clean. It's awesome! I also swear by doTerra's essential oils - They're the most potent, safe or pure I've ever used. You might want to check them out, since it sounds like purity is important given your body's sensitivities. Click on the "shop" button in the top right corner and poke around from there...

Thanks also for the cleaning supplies recommendation. Sounds like a really good supplier! Glad you posted, and I'm glad you're enjoying the recipes. Good luck with the lip balm. Let me know if the facial oil helps your acne. Take care,
