I was chatting with a rep at New Directions Aromatics, and she suggested that Lemon Myrtle oil is actually more effective for its antiseptic properties than Lemon essential oil or even Tea Tree, for that matter.
I'd like to get some more opinions on this.
Also, I really love the scent of Tea Tree oil - would these two scents blend well? I am about to make my first ever all-purpose natural cleaners!
Thanks :)THE ANSWER
Excellent question! Lemon Myrtle is an extremely effective germ killer. I find it impossible to say that one essential oil is better than another - only that they're different. Lemon essential oil, for example, has over 39 different chemical compounds. Tea Tree has over 98, and Lemon Myrtle has around 50.
They all do so much more than just one job in our body and environment. For example, in addition to its antibacterial properties, Lemon improves concentration, memory and mood (among other things). Most oils have 5 to 8 main uses, plus many more secondary uses.
That said, Lemon Myrtle does have an extremely high concentration of Citrals (95% compared to about 3% in Lemon) so it's very potent for cleaning.
Sooo... Lemon, Lemon Myrtle and Tea tree are all good cleaners, so you might try blending them all together :) I do think Tea Tree and Lemon Myrtle will smell excellent together, maybe with a touch of Peppermint for kick.
To make an all-purpose cleaning spray, you might try 1/4 cup white vinegar, 2 cups water, 7 drops Tea Tree, 4 drops Lemon or Peppermint, 3 drops Lemon Myrtle and 1 drop Geranium or Ylang Ylang.
One caution: Lemon Myrtle is toxic when used undiluted on human skin, so you want to be sure to dulite it to 1% or less of any recipe. Also, both Lemon and Lemon Myrtle can increase your risk of sunburn when used on skin.
I hope that helps answer your question. Enjoy your new homemade cleaners!
