Homemade Lotion Recipe

Luscious lavender lotion recipe. Make your own homemade body lotion... soothing, nourishing and soooo relaxing!

With this easy lotion recipe, you can make this soothing lavender lotion as rich or as light as you want. That's one of the great things about creating your own essential oil skin care lotions and potions!

I'll start by explaining the basic recipe and then add some notes on customizing it.

Lavender is good for everyone, so I'll also include a couple of scent variations; one for men and one for women (feel free to ignore the gender aspect and use the one you like.)

Lavender Homemade Lotion Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons (3 to 8g) Emulsifying wax
(depending on how thick you want it)
  • 1/3 cup (75ml) Jojoba or Apricot Kernel oil
  • 2 tablespoons (25ml) Vegetable Glycerin
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) distilled Water
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Vitamin E
  • 10 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
  • One of the Essential Oil blends below

Lavender Rose Blend

20 drops Lavender essential oil
5 drops Rosewood essential oil
5 drops Rose Geranium essential oil
Lavender Woods Blend

20 drops Lavender essential oil
8 drops Sandalwood essential oil
2 drops Cedarwood essential oil

Directions

  1. Stir together the oil, emulsifying wax and glycerin in the top part of a double boiler, warming slowly over a low heat until the wax is melted. Remove from heat and pour in the Vitamin E.

  2. In a separate pot on the stove or in the microwave, gently warm the water just until lukewarm.

  3. Slowly pour the water into the oil, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until the mixture is thick and smooth.

  4. Stir in the essential oils and the grapefruit seed extract. Pour the lavender lotion into a clean, sterilized 8oz (250ml) dark glass or PET plastic bottle and allow it to cool before putting the lid on.

  5. Shake the bottle occasionally as the homemade body lotion cools to prevent the ingredients from separating. Store in a cool, dark place.

This body lotion recipe makes approximately 8oz (250ml) aromatherapy lotion.

Customizing Your Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

For a thicker consistency, add a little more emulsifying wax (up to a half a teaspoon more.) For a thinner consistency, add just a little less.

You can also reduce the strength of the scent by decreasing the number of drops of essential oils. Do not increase the essential oils, however, since they should only be a certain percentage of the total recipe.

Choosing the best carrier oils: For a richer, more moisturizing lotion, use Sweet Almond oil. For oily, acne-prone skin, use Grapeseed oil.

You can customize your blends further by adding small amounts of Avocado or Evening Primrose oil. Read the carrier oils page and see what might work best for you.
