Is vinegar safe for color treated hair?

Q: Does apple cider vinegar strip the color off my color treated hair?

I recently made an apple cider vinegar toner/hair rinse. The ingredients are natural herbs soaked for 6 weeks in organic apple cider vinegar. How often should I use it as a rinse on my hair?

A: Hmmm... Good question! I looked it up, and you're right - apparently vinegar can strip the hair dye out of colored hair because the acetic acid in the vinegar is a strong clarifier.

I personally haven't noticed a major difference - my color fades anyways between colorings so I don't worry about it.

You could try diluting your rinse with water so it's a little more gentle if you want. It sounds like a great hair rinse! I would think using it once a week would be enough - maybe twice a week if your hair tends to be greasy.

Good luck :)

Here's some herbal hair rinse recipes for anyone coming to this page who might want to try making your own. Enjoy!

I read in a magazine that white vinegar is good for color treated hair, it won't strip the color, so that's what I've been using for the past two years, I use it once a month to get rid of the shampoo and conditioner build up and it leaves my hair soft and shinny, I also use it before I go to the hairdresser to get my hair colored and it seems to make the color last longer.
The dark apple cider vinegar will strip the color but not the white or shall I say the clear vinegar which you can buy anywhere. Good luck and try it! It's great!
