How to Make Shampoo and Conditioner for Black Hair

by Elkae
(Toronto)

Hi,

I am so glad I came across your website. It has so much useful information. I have black hair and it's been said that the ingredients used in most shampoo isn't helpful for my hair type.

I want to make my own shampoo which I know has no chemicals to damage my hair. I would like to know if these ingredients would work together:

Rosemary, coconut oil olive oil, ginger, sage, green tea, lemongrass, aloe vera and horsetail extract.

What would your basic method be to use these to make shampoo and conditioner?

Also what is ylang ylang and where can I purchase it? The website you have links to purchase ingredients - does it ship to Toronto?

Hi Elkae,

Thanks for your question. Here's a basic shampoo recipe:

* 1/4 cup (60ml) green tea
* 1/2 cup (120ml) liquid Castile Soap
* 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
* 1/2 teaspoon horsetail extract
* 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
* 1/4 tsp Vitamin E (or 1 capsule)
* 5 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
* 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
* 5 drops rosemary essential oil
* 3 drops ginger essential oil
* 2 drops sage essential oil

Combine all the ingredients in a 250ml dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Shake before using.

If you want a thicker shampoo, reduce or eliminate the green tea. If you eliminate the tea, you don't need the grapefruit seed extract - it's a natural preservative that kills any bacteria in the liquid.

Here's a link to a basic conditioner recipe. Just follow the instructions but substitute your oils and additives where appropriate, along the same lines as what I did for the shampoo.
