How to Make Shampoo and Conditioner for Black Hair

by Elkae

I am so glad I came across your website. It has so much useful information. I have black hair and it's been said that the ingredients used in most shampoo isn't helpful for my hair type.

I want to make my own shampoo which I know has no chemicals to damage my hair. I would like to know if these ingredients would work together:

Rosemary, coconut oil olive oil, ginger, sage, green tea, lemongrass, aloe vera and horsetail extract.

What would your basic method be to use these to make shampoo and conditioner?

Also what is ylang ylang and where can I purchase it? The website you have links to purchase ingredients - does it ship to Toronto?

Hi Kyley,

Thanks for your reply.

No, I didn't get it from your website, it was given to me by someone whom I believe may have bought it outsie of the UK.

I make my own natural hair oil and was asked to try and make shampoo as its very difficult to find natural shampoo in the shops.

Hi Sonia,

Did you get that list of ingredients from my site? If it was from another site, did it not come with a recipe or amounts for all those ingredients?

Are you trying to make shampoo or conditioner? Or both?

The recipes I posted on my site are the only ones I've found that work really well and don't wreck my hair. (That said, I'm not really a hair expert, more of an essential oils expert...)

Hi Elkae,

Thanks for your question. Here's a basic shampoo recipe:

* 1/4 cup (60ml) green tea
* 1/2 cup (120ml) liquid Castile Soap
* 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
* 1/2 teaspoon horsetail extract
* 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
* 1/4 tsp Vitamin E (or 1 capsule)
* 5 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
* 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
* 5 drops rosemary essential oil
* 3 drops ginger essential oil
* 2 drops sage essential oil

Combine all the ingredients in a 250ml dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Shake before using.

If you want a thicker shampoo, reduce or eliminate the green tea. If you eliminate the tea, you don't need the grapefruit seed extract - it's a natural preservative that kills any bacteria in the liquid.

Here's a link for the shampoo recipe page so you can find any ingredients you need:

Here's a link to a basic conditioner recipe. Just follow the instructions but substitute your oils and additives where appropriate, along the same lines as what I did for the shampoo.

You might also want to check out the link below. Just Naturals Organics has an entire line of 100% organic hair products for black hair. Take a look at the ingredients lists on the products to get some ideas...

I hope that helps, Elkae, and best of luck!
