How can I improve the consistency of my moisturizer

by Tracy
(New York, NY)

Hi!
I'm so excited to find your site.
I've been making my own moisturizer for about five years now. I need to know how to make it creamier and smoother. I'll be 50 this year and have drydrydry skin. This lotion keeps me soft and dewy but takes a while to absorb because it's got so much oil in it.

I use:
cocoa butter
shea butter
soy oil
almond oil
corn oil
safflower oil
sunflower oil
sesame oil
rose otto or absolute
chamomile essential oil
gardenia essential oil
neroli essential oil
frankincense essential oil
grapefruit seed extract
royal jelly
Retinyl A (Retinyl Palmitate)
borax 1/8 tsp
rose water 2 Tblspns

I never measure (I'm guestimating) since it's only for me, but I'd like to create a consistent recipe that's easier to apply and absorbs well. I've used vegetable glycerin in the past. I don't really recall if it helped. Do you think you can help?

Keeping It Real... And Kind
by: Kyley

Gill,

I considered removing this entire line of questioning because I don't like the negative attitude that has crept in, but I've decided to leave it up because your answer is so helpful, and I'm sure there are people out there who will appreciate the information.

I did remove Tracy's negative comment prior to posting this one and banned her from posting again because this forum is welcome ONLY to those who share a positive "help and be helped" attitude. It's worth stating again - good vibes only please!

Thanks,

Kyley

Thank You Gill

Thanks, Gill, for chiming in with such a caring, well researched, well thought-out comment. I'm sure others will appreciate your contribution as well.

Tracy, I'm sorry Gill's information wasn't what you were looking for. Please be reminded that we are a community of people helping people, and it's appropriate to express appreciation for people's help.

The fact is that, given the very high volume of oils in your moisturizer, there is nothing you can do using that specific recipe to increase its absorbency. That's why Gill was suggesting you try something different.

Thank you for posing your question. Good luck with your future endeavors.

Kyley

Not the answer i'm looking for

I want the ingredients I have. I am solely looking for information to improve absorbency.
I use the ingredients I do for a reason. I am not looking for that information, so unfortunately your answer gave me no information to help the absorbency question.

I make my moisturizer's but never have that many base oils in it, I choose Jojoba always as my main base oil then add which ever other base oils is good for the skin type. Jojoba is excellent for all skin types as well as mature skin.

I always always measure my ingredients out, and my oil is a 1/3 of a cup, I then fill Jojoba up to a 1/4 the fill to a 1/3 with the other base oils in.

Liquid glycerine and Aloe Vera Gel also go into my products all the time.

If it was me doing your cream I would definately use Jojoba oil and then pick one of the other base oils from your list that will do more than one job for you, i.e. use the base oil which will help your skin more every oil will do specific things but when looking into it they can also overlap, so you may find that instead of using two base oils you could get away with using one that will do quite a few specific jobs in one.

As I said before I would most definately measure all my ingredients out, as this helps with the consistency, texture and oiliness of your product.

The reciepe I use for dry skin and mature is on the site, under mature skin moisturizer, I find this works really well.

It may be a bore but I do find that by researching the different oils to find out what they can do and provide for your skin is the crucial part of making any lotion, moisturizer, body lotion, bubble bath and so on, it may take a bit of time to do this but it is worth while.

If your happy with the essential oils you are using I would stick with them but again it is a good idea to research these as well as again they can overlap (which isn't a bad thing). Also remember if you are using it as a moisturizer for the face you do need to be careful that you don't use too much, for my face moisturizer's I use a 1% ratio, so say for a 30ml jar of moisturizer it would be 12 drops of all your essential oils together.

I hope this helps you.
