Essential Oils for Fruit Flies

by Lisa

I'm having a problem getting rid of some Fruit flies. I have put all the fruit away and checked for rotten food and I still have them. Is there an essential oil that would help make them go away. Thanks for you help.

Drain flies ZAPPED!

We had drain/fruit flies really bad so my husband took a can of Raid and started spraying. That very strong chemical smell filled the house so much of that smell that it was hard to breathe. I had to lock my kids up in my room for hours while i aired out the rest of the house. I knew I to figure it out quickly. I made a concoction of mostly vinegar and water and added essential oils of lavender, tea tree oil, oregano, and maybe a couple of others. I gave that to my husband to spray away. Got 'em!!!

Thyme for drain or fruit flies
by: Anonymous

Thank you so much. I had fruit or drain flies for a few weeks. I was using thyme oil for sinus. I put some oil on a cotton ball near my desk and they seemed to disappear. I threw the cotton ball, and they returned. Needless to say I brought out the cotton ball with thyme oil again.

Fruit flies are nor drain flies

Fruit flies and drain flies are two different kind of flies. I have had more problems with getting rid of drain flies. Surface cleaners with thyme or thymol seem to help curb them.

Thank you!

What a super-helpful comment! Thank you so much.

I had no idea you could get fruit flies from your drain, so it never would have occurred to me to solve it like that.

Thanks again for a great post!

If you are finding fruit flies in your house, you might be getting them from your drain.

A great way to naturally clean your drain is to sprinkle a liberal about of baking soda and then chase it with vinegar (some yucky stuff may come up, that but that's ok. The reaction will clean out your drain and flush away any flies). Do this in all of your, bathroom, etc.

It worked really well for me. I was getting them in our spare bathroom that we hardly use...and this solution did the trick :)

Good luck.

Insect Repellent Essential Oils

I don't know about using essential oils for fruit flies - nothing I found included eo's, but here's a trick I use...

Put an inch or two of water, plus a small squirt of liquid dish soap into a jar or drinking glass. Cover the top with some cling wrap, then use a pen or the tip of a knife to poke some small holes in the cling wrap. The fruit flies fly into the holes and can't get back out.

Another fruit fly trap I found in a book called "Great Garden Formulas" is to fill a jar with water, then add a tablespoon of cider vinegar. Put it near your fruit. They fly into the liquid and drown. I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know how well it works.

Hope that helps, and good luck!
