This can be a tricky question - maybe trickier than you realize. There's a lot of choice out there when it comes to buying essential oils. And a HUGE variation in the levels of quality you can buy. Here's why:
The field of essential oils is unregulated, meaning there are no set standards
for essential oils. Essential oils range in price and quality, and many of them are not 100% pure -
they often use fragrant synthetic chemical substitutes to dilute or replace more expensive essential oil extracts.
So in simple terms: when you buy essential oils, you get what you pay for.
At first glance, dōTERRA's essential oils cost more than some other brands. But there's more to the story than that.
One drop of dōTERRA's essential oil is equal to 3 to 5 drops of most other brands. Why? Because the purity is flawless. Greater purity means greater potency - stronger therapeutic powers. Stronger oils mean less drops per recipe.
So let's compare. You can buy a 15ml bottle of Lavender Essential Oil from dōTERRA for $28. 15ml from Mountain Rose costs $9.50.
You only use 1/3 (or less) the amount of dōTERRA oils in every recipe, so divide that price by 3. That means you're buying the same number of "uses" for $9.33. AND you get the peace of mind of using an absolutely safe, effective essential oil.
Now let's compare the cost of the oils to the cost of healthcare. For example, say your daughter has an earache. Here's the story in the United States:
Now consider that essential oils are gentle, natural, safe, effective and non-addicting. Seem worth it?
dōTERRA does 6 types of quality testing to make sure:
They're completely free of pesticides or other chemical residues.
Each oil has the correct composition of active natural compounds (the same "fingerprint").
There's no fillers or artificial ingredients.
In fact, part of the reason dōTERRA's essential oils cost more is because they cost about 3 times as much at source, rather than because of price markups.

Mountain Rose was my first choice for a long time until I found dōTERRA.
Their products are strong, many of them are organic, and their company is committed to earth-friendly practices that make them an aromatherapy supplier to respect. Plus, their prices are excellent!
Their selection is also (almost) everything I could ask for - I just wish they'd supply candlemaking stuff so we could have a one-stop shop.
They're my go-to guys for carrier oils,
jars and other basic supplies.
Oh yeah, also aromatherapy recipe books!
Here's what I suggest: buy your main essential oils, the ones you use every day or for their therapeutic properties rather than just their pretty aroma,
from dōTERRA. For me that's lavender, tea tree and dōTERRA's OnGuard blend.
Then buy everything else from Mountain Rose.
I love the positive, friendly attitude of their staff, and I like that they're active in their local
community with educational activities and such.
The only negative I've heard is some concern about increased shipping prices, but I find that that's the case with all shipping. I think shipping in general has risen due to rising fuel costs, etc.
My third choice for buying essential oils is Amazon.com because they're a reputable, safe, worldwide online supplier.
You need to do a little more research regarding the quality of the brands you buy, but their prices are competitive,
there's a million choices and they never run out of stock. Plus I love the Super Saver free shipping!
When I can't find what I need from dōTERRA or Mountain Rose, I head over to Amazon.com. I can almost always find it there,
plus I use them a lot for aromatherapy books because their selection is unbeatable.
