Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

Luscious lavender homemade lotion

With this easy homemade body lotion recipe, you can make this soothing lavender lotion as rich or as light as you want. That's one of the great things about creating your own homemade lotions and potions!

I'll start by explaining the basics of how to make homemade body lotion and then add some ideas for customizing it.

Lavender is good for everyone, so I'll also include a couple of scent variations; one for men and one for women (feel free to ignore the gender aspect and use the one you like.)

Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 to 2 1/2tablespoons (8 to 10g) Emulsifying wax (depending on how thick you want it)
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2g) Stearic Acid (stabilizer derived from plant oils)
  • 1/3 cup (75ml) Jojoba, Grapeseed or Apricot Kernel oil
  • 2 tablespoons (25ml) Vegetable Glycerin
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) distilled Water
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) Vitamin E
  • 10 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
  • One of the Essential Oil blends below

Lavender Rose Blend
20 drops Lavender essential oil, 5 drops Palmarosa essential oil, 5 drops Rose Geranium
(Note: if you have dōTERRA oils only use 8 to 10 drops of lavender and 2 drops of geranium)

Lavender Spice Blend
17 drops Lavender essential oil, 10 drops Patchouli, 3 drops Clove (don't use clove if your skin is sensitive)
(For dōTERRA oils only use 6 or 7 drops of lavender, 2 to 4 drops of patchouli and 1 drop of clove)

Lavender Woods Blend
20 drops Lavender essential oil, 8 drops Sandalwood, 2 drops Cedarwood
(For dōTERRA oils only use 8 to 10 drops of lavender and 2 to 4 drops of sandalwood)

Directions

  1. Stir together the oil, emulsifying wax, stearic acid and glycerin in the top part of a double boiler, warming slowly over a low heat until the wax is melted. Remove from heat and add the Vitamin E.

  2. In a separate pot on the stove or in the microwave, gently warm the water just until lukewarm.

  3. Slowly pour the water into the oil, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until the mixture is thick and smooth.

  4. Stir in the essential oils and the grapefruit seed extract.

  5. Pour the lavender lotion into a clean, sterilized 8oz (250ml) dark glass or PET plastic bottle and allow it to cool before putting the lid on.

  6. Shake the bottle occasionally as the homemade body lotion cools to prevent the ingredients from separating. Store in a cool, dark place.

This body lotion recipe makes approximately 8oz (250ml) aromatherapy lotion.

Customizing Your Homemade Body Lotion Recipe

Instead of using water, power up the healing properties of your body lotion recipe by replacing it with lavender, rose geranium or sandalwood hydrosol.

Hydrosols are made when plants are steam distilled to create essential oils. They contain not only the sweet scent of the flowers but also the same properties as the essential oil, in a more dilute (and often less expensive) form.

This is a great way to get the gorgeous scent of rose essential oil without paying the hideous price. Click to buy rose hydrosol.

You can also customize your lotion for your skin type by adding small amounts of special carrier oils like Avocado or Evening Primrose oil. Read the aromatherapy carrier oils page and see what might work best for you.

Ready-to-Go Organic Moisturizers

If you're struggling with dry skin, acne or wrinkles, you might want lotion that's a little more sophisticated than homemade. I definitely recommend Just Natural Organic Care.

Their products are much better than many commercial products because they only use the best organic ingredients - no harsh fillers or chemicals to hurt your skin. Click the links to check them out, and make sure you scroll down to the ingredients to see why I recommend them.

natural psoriasis ointment Psoriasis Lotion
"As one who has suffered from persistent psoriasis, tried virtually every cream or lotion known and even made a few of my own, all I can say is 'wow'.

In the 2 months since I have purchased this product I have not had to resort to hydrocortisone. Try this natural product - it's amazing!" Shawn W, Newark DE

organic anti aging lotion Anti-Aging Lotion
"I use this facial lotion every morning after I wash my face. I have pretty sensitive skin, so I have tried a TON of lotions and this doesn't irritate my skin or make me break out. A little is all you need for great results.

It smells nice and make-up goes on smooth and it gives your skin a tiny glow. Plus noticably evens out skin tone, fades discolorations, and smooths away tiny wrinkles.

For once a product that does exactly what it claims to!! I'm sold." Connie R, Yreka CA

sunblock hand lotion Sun Block Lotion
"I LOVE this hand lotion. It was recommended to me 2 years ago and I've used it everyday since. It has a pleasant smell (not strong), the lotion has a nice texture (it is not thick or greasy), and it moisturizes very well.

It controls dry skin all year long... including elbows, knees, and feet. Everyone in our family uses it from newborn on up. It may seem a bit pricey, but it is well worth it and a bottle lasts quite a long time (a little goes a long way). It's awesome!" Cheryl C, Hopewell Junction NY
