Aromatherapy for Headache

Ease headache pain naturally

lavender aromatherapy for headache Aromatherapy can be very helpful when it comes to headaches - especially those nasty tension headaches you get from clenching your jaw or hunching your shoulders on stressful days.

It makes sense to use aromatherapy for headache because essential oils work on two levels.

  • The emotional level: The scent gives us a calming, happy escape from the moment.
  • The physical level: The healing properties of the essential oils are absorbed into our bodies to balance our nervous system and relax our muscles.

Aromatherapy for Headache: Taming the Migraine

Aromatherapy can also sometimes be helpful for migraines. I say 'sometimes' because I found that what worked one day didn't always work the next, and I had to catch it early enough to be effective. However, I definitely recommend trying an aromatherapy blend for migraine - any port in a storm, right?

Ginger or perppermint may stop or ease both migraine pain and nausea. I sometimes find that if I drink a cup of ginger tea at the first sign of a migraine, I can prevent it from developing into a full-blown attack.

Alternatively, try any massage oil recipe containing ginger essential oil, such as Sensual Massage Oil or Pain Relieving Massage Oil.

For self-massage, rub a little of the massage oil on your stomach, the back of your neck and in small circles on your temples (Do NOT get it in your eyes!) Also massage it into any other part of you that feels tight or tense.

Or try rubbing some Peppermint Lotion into your temples, the back of your neck and behind your ears.

Aromatherapy for Headache: Fast Fix

aromatherapy
The fastest way to use aromatherapy for headache: Put 3 drops lavender and 2 drops peppermint essential oils onto a folded up tissue.

Take three long, slow, deep breaths of the aroma. Take a short break, then take three more deep breaths. Do this up to three times.

Keep the tissue nearby so that any passing breeze wafts the scent up to you.

This is a good emergency trick because you can carry the bottle of undiluted essential oil in your bag or keep it in your desk. And, at the very least, your space will smell good!

Point of Interest:

Don't make the mistake of thinking the lavender is always the answer for tension-related problems. I sometimes find that lavender makes my headache worse, whereas bergamot or frankincense works to relieve the pain and tension.

Aromatherapy for Headache: Try a Hot Footbath

Some headaches are caused by too much blood in the head. Dilating the blood vessels in the feet and legs stimulates circulation, relieving congestion in other parts of the body (such as your head.) Here's how to give yourself a healing aromatherapy footbath:

  1. Boil a kettle full of water to refill your footbath as it cools.
  2. Fill a large, deep basin two thirds full of hot water.
  3. Add 1 drop lavender, 1 drop peppermint or rosemary and one drop ginger or black pepper essential oils. Swoosh the water a little to disperse the oils.
  4. Sit on a chair and put your feet into the basin, making sure the water covers your ankles. As the water cools, add the water from the kettle as needed to keep the fottbath hot.
  5. Slip on some cozy socks and relax for 30 minutes.

Tip: Add some small round stones or glass beads to the footbath and rub your feet over them as you soak to give yourself a gentle foot massage - extra-relaxing!
