Aromatherapy Carrier Oils Help - What does " Dilute to a maximum of 10%" mean?

by Denise
(USA)

Hi,
I'm fairly new to working with Carrier Oils and am not sure what is meant by "Dilute to a max of 10%".

Does this mean dilute with water? Another carrier oil? Also, does it mean I can dilute with less than 10%?

The oil I want is very sticky/waxy. It's supposed to be good for Skin Irritation.

Would someone please show me an example of how to dilute the oil? And with what.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks,

Denise

Cheap Oils & Bottles
by: Denise

OMG, I know what you mean Kyley!
I've never purchased cheap Rose Oil, but I've smelled it in stores.

For me, the worst is cheap Vanilla (or maybe it's imitation Vanilla). My daughter has been using this awful perfume w/a vanilla scent for years that makes me gag every time she comes in a room! It's like she bathes herself in the stuff, and she never takes the hints I've been throwing at her! (lol)

Oh, there is one other thing I want to ask you: For Bath Salts, I'm thinking of using 4oz bottles. How many 4oz bottles does that recipe make?
I really like those cork bottles. They're pretty.

Thanks again! :)

Rose Essential Oil
by: Kyley

Hey Denise,

You're most welcome :)

You pretty much have to save up for the really expensive rose eo. With the expensive oils, you'll definitely find that a cheap one smells bad compared to the real deal. I cheaped out on a couple of the when I was really poor, and they're just not worth buying. My advice is, don't waste your money, just save up!

Thanks again, Kyley! =)

First: Sorry about the double post on this question. (I know I posted it somewhere else on this site. Please feel free to delete it. I'm still figuring out how to navigate on here) ;)

Second: Thanks so much for replying. I really, REALLY appreciate it.

Third: Yes, I have a feeling I'm going to have to play around with the amount of the 5% Rose Oil I have. (LOL)
It's a pity that the Rose Essential is so darn expensive. I've looked all over the internet to try to find one that is affordable to me, but so far, I'm hitting brick walls.

Anyway, I'll experiment with what I have. If the Bath Salts turn out nicely, I plan on making some to give as Christmas gifts.

Thanks again! =)

Using Rose Essential Oil Diluted in Grapeseed
by: Kyley

Hi Denise,

I'm glad you found my answer helpful. I forgot to mention that you don't have to use the full 10 percent avocado oil, you can use less if you want.

For the rose bath salts and your rose absolute diluted in grapeseed oil, I have to start by saying I'm awful at math so I can't give you the correct mathematical answer. That said, you can't really do this wrong.

I would suggest you start by putting in 20 drops of your diluted rose oil (plus the other eo's.) If after 24 hours it doesn't smell "rosy" enough, add 5 to 10 more drops. Keep doing that until you get where you want, scent-wise.

Because the rose absolute is so diluted in the grapeseed oil, there's no danger of overdoing it, and I'm not sure how many drops you'll need because it has such a powerful scent, even diluted. Just mess with it until you like the result!

Sorry to be so unspecific, but I hope you can work with that! I'd love to know how it turns out, btw :)

THANKS KYLEY!

I really appreciate your answering my question. You helped me a lot on that. Especially with the links.

I have both Avocado and Jojoba Oils on hand and will do that today.

Next, I want to try the Rose Bath-Salts. My only problem is with the Rose Oil. I can't afford the regular Rose Absolute, but I do have a bottle of 5% Rose Absolute in Grapeseed Oil. So my current problem is trying to figure out how many drops of the 5% will equal 1 drop of the regular Absolute Rose. I love the aroma of Rose Oil and really don't want to leave it out or substitute it for something else in the recipe.

Would you be able to help me with that?

Thanks again,

Denise

Diluting Essential Oils
by: Kyley

Hi Denise,

Good question. What diluting to a maximum of 10 percent means is that you only want that carrier oil to be 10 percent of the whole recipe.

For example, if you're using avocado oil in 100 ml recipe, you would use 10 mls avocado oil and 90 mls sweet almond or jojoba oil (10 percent of 100 mls.)

Here's a link to the carrier oils page to help you choose the best carrier oils for your project...

By the way, oil and water won't mix unless you use an emulsifier, such as the emulsifying wax in any of the lotion recipes.

Hope that helps! If my answer wasn't clear, feel free to give me the specifics of your recipe and I'll help you directly with that...
